Pongal this time has been more than just average for Tamil Cinema lovers. Both new biggies Nanban (a re-make of Hindi superhit 3 Idiots) and Vettai have managed to bring in grand openings at the box office.
Nanban has already crossed Rs. 50 crores while Vettai has managed to get a slow but positive start and has raked in around 15 crores in four days. Both Nanban and Vettai had almost 90 % and 85 % occupancy respectively during its opening festival weekend.
Both the respective casts of Nanban and Vettai – Vijay, Jeeva, Srikanth and Arya and Madhavan are elated that the film has opened to well.
Well it is very obvious that Shankar’s Nanban has been ahead in this race and there are reports that Nanban has already sold its satellite rights to Vijay TV ( A Division of Star Network) for a plum amount. What adds to this is that the Tamil Nadu state has also waived the Entertainment Tax (30%) bringing down the ticket prices hereby increasing more patrons. Nanban is the first Tamil film to enjoy this perk as a part of government’s rules.
Both Nanban and Vettai have also set the International Box Office on fire and has generated around Rs. 92 Lakhs at the UK Box Office while Vettai has generated around Rs. 13 Lakhs. It continues to rule in countries like Australia, Germany and Holland as well.
There were however reports that suggested that Nanban collections are exaggerated and it has not collected Rs. 50 crores but these are just some rumors doing the rounds.
But it is good to see that both these films are doing well and making Tamil Cinema go places. It’s only a matter of time when we shall see that which film actually goes ahead of other, but the result kinda is obvious!!
