There were times (not long back rather just few years back) when television industry which is called small screen was not high-rated in the eyes of the big screen’s stars. They were just seen in the ads on television. Working on small screen was a big no for the film stars since there was no international exposure for them, not enough money for them and not a big stardom which they enjoyed being a movie star. In total, getting themselves attached to the television industry was not beneficial for the Bollywood stars.
Even the satellite channels were working and the soaps were on high demands. Small screen stars too started getting international fame with the advent of Ekta Kapoor’s soaps in particular. TV stars too started getting bigger chunks of money. Nonetheless we hardly saw the film stars turning their face to the world of small screen.
The inclination of the Bollywood stars’ towards television began happening when Amitabh Bachchan was roped in to do a game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) in 2000. The idea was unique starting off a game show by fetching in the Bollywood legend whose fan following was super high not only in India but also across the globe. It worked big time. Amitabh was bestowed with lavishly lip-smacking fees for hosting this show that became super popular in the Indian sub-continent.
Bachchan’s popularity started multiplying and getting high speedily with this show. Even due to this show, his film fee and endorsement charges shoved to super heights. It opened the eyes of the Bollywood industry and soon we began witnessing the big screen stars’ tendency and liking for the television. Every other wanted to host the shows like Mr. Bachchan.
The third season of KBC was offered to Bollywood King, Shah Rukh Khan who too charged the bigger amount for hosting the season. Then the journey began rolling on and on. Till today, we have seen many biggies of the trade hosting their TV shows and even the celebrities of Hindi cinema are hugely seen on television judging the reality shows (they too are colossally paid). The prominent names of the cinema who have done shows on television include Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Genelia D’Souza, Priyanka Chopra and others.
The ones who have appeared as the judges on the reality shows include Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Hrithik Roshan, Farah Khan, Sonu Nigam, Anu Malik, Javed Akhtar, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sarooj Khan, Himesh Reshammiya, Asha Bhonsle, Mithun Chakraborty and many others.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Zor Ka Jhatka got supremely popular among the masses and he charged much more than the fee he takes for a film. Salman Khan’s Dus Ka Dum was the talk of the town and people watched it crazily. Salman too filled his bank account with mammoth amount of money he grabbed from the show’s fees.
Akshay Kumar has been associated with Fear Factor (India) and his show always grabs good ratings. He too takes the bomb of money for hosting this show.
Aamir Khan too has now plunged into this business of hosting shows. His show is now going to begin from May this year. The promotional activities are being done presently on the channels. It will be a weekly chat show titled ‘Satyamev Jayate’ to be aired on Star TV and Doordarshan. Mr. Perfectionist has reportedly signed the eye-opening deal for this show. He is much enthusiastic about the show that he postponed the release of his upcoming film ‘Talaash’ for this show.
Today even the Bollywood celebrities have started becoming the brand ambassadors for the television channels – well, this is a new trend and is much workable if the celeb’s stardom is super high. Madhuri Dixit has been associated as a brand ambassador for the new channel ‘Life OK’ (an entertainment channel launched by Star Group, India). She has been offered endlessly high price for this endorsement.
The fact of the matter is that the Bollywood stars today love to get the small screen assignments since they are paid double rather triple the amount they charge for a film. Handsome number of crores is reportedly conferred to them for a single small screen assignment and in addition to this, they get projection world-over due to satellite channels. Their stardom now turns mammoth being seen on television. If all this is pocketed at small screen, then why to make distance from small screen! Thus Bollywood celebs are quite intelligent and smart – they don’t create any distance from TV rather create opportunities themselves to join in the television jobs. Well, it is beneficial seeing the Bollywood celebs on television – it looks good and masses love it which is why they (celebs) are hugely paid.
