Mumbai: The iconic movie ‘Sholay’, had originally released on the 15th of August, in the year 1975. The moment since which the news about remaking this movie in 3D became public, Bollywood and the whole of India has been suitably excited. The newest piece of information that is being circulated now is that, the date for the release of the 3D version has been fixed as the 15th of August, 2012.
For those of you who were thinking of dismissing this news as nothing more than rumour, there is enough reason to rethink. ‘Shaan Uttam Singh’, who is G.P.Sippy’s grandson, has confirmed this news to be true. It is worth mentioning here that he is not only G.P. Sippy’s grandson, but also one of the people who own the copyright of the original movie. He has been heard saying that the 3D version of ‘Sholay’ is indeed being made. The aim is to allow the new version to also have an August 15th release.
This is not the first time that Bollywood and its ardent followers are hearing about remaking this cult film. The same news had surfaced some time ago, when we heard that ‘Mukta Arts’ was working hard to give us the ‘Sholay’ in 3D. They had joined forces with ‘Maya Digital’ which belonged to Ketan Mehta; in order to turn this vision into reality. But sadly, this project could not be completed. ‘Mukta Arts’ gave up the idea thanks to the number of legal tangles and problems that the Sippys had been involved in at that time.
But, thankfully for the fans of ‘Sholay’, the idea of making it in 3D was not lost entirely. In fact, ‘Jayanti Lal Gada’, who is the current CMD of ‘Pen India Private Ltd’ has stated that the idea of remaking ‘Sholay’ was the given by those who held the copyright to it. According to her, there could be no other movie which has the potential to appeal more to the Indian audience, if remade. Even after 20 years of releasing, the film got a record TRP when aired on television. So, it is not far-fetched to assume that the 3D version will generate a similar excitement among people. The technological improvements and advancements will only add to the viewing pleasure of the movie, or so feel its makers and copyright owners. Even the release date has been chosen so as to keep it same as the original release date in 1975.
How the audience likes this new version of ‘Sholay’ will be seen when it releases. But for now, the excitement that this news has generated is massive.
