When we take the names of Katrina Kaif, Ali Zafar & Imran Khan, the only thing that pops up in your mind is their latest film together, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. But apart from this Yashraj movie, there is something else common to these three actors.
All three of them might be working in the Indian film industry, but they are not Indians, according to their passports. MBKD’s Luv, Ali Zafar is a Pakistani national & visits India for professional reasons on temporary visa.
But the story of His younger brother (in the movie) Kush, played by ‘apna’ Imran Khan is a bit different. He stays in India and is married to an Indian citizen (Avantika Malik) but he is not truly ‘apna’. Imran Khan is an American Citizen. Born Imran Pal, he started using his maternal surname Khan, after the divorce of his parents. He stays in India on a working visa and has applied to get an Indian citizenship.
The Dulhan of the movie, Katrina Kaif, is a British Citizen. Her passport name is Katrina Turquotte. While Katrina has lived with this surname all her life, she was rechristened as Katrina Kaif by her Boom Producer Ayesha Shroff, as she felt Kaif sounded more acceptable than Turquotte. The surname Kaif comes in from her father Mohammed Kaif, who was an Indian Kashmiri. She works on an employment visa in India. In other words ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’ means an American, Pakistani & British national.
If Danny Boyle’s Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire was considered an Indian movie, owing to its Indian star cast; we wonder what people will call Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, an international project, maybe.
