Released in 2008, the film “Race” became the fourth biggest Bollywood hit of the year following the likes of Ghajini, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Singh is Kinng. With its twists and power packed performance, “Race” was enjoyed by one and all. The immense success of “Race” inspired the director duo of Abbas-Mustan to plan a sequel which they called “Race 2”. The film went on floors on November 5, 2011 and is slated for release in the later part of the year 2012.
The makers of “Race 2” had quite a time in selecting their cast. Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor were the first actors to sign the film and that too in the year of 2009 i.e. two years before the first leg of shooting began. They are the only members who were retained from the original cast of the prequel “Race”. The third actor to join the bandwagon was John Abraham who was roped in by the film makers in 2010. John Abraham is supposed to be the main antagonist of “Race 2”.
Actresses Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were at first contacted to pair opposite Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham previously. Later Sonakshi Sinha was roped in as a substitute for Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone has been brought in place of Priyanka Chopra. But both Deepika and Sonakshi had problems in adjusting their dates. Sonakshi chose to opt out of “Race 2” due to her commitments with “Dabaang 2”. Finally the role went to Jacqueline Fernandez. “Race 2” will also feature Ameesha Patel and Bipasha Basu. Quite interestingly “Race 2” would be the first movie in which the ex-flames John Abraham and Bipasha Basu would be seen together following their break up last year.
“Race 2” has not been free from controversies and rumors. First there was the doubt whether John Abraham would even work in this film given the involvement of his ex-girlfriend Bipasha Basu in “Race 2”. Later that doubt was clarified on the grounds that John Abraham and Bipasha Basu would not be sharing the screen space. Later the makers if “Race 2” faced problems with Deepika Padukone’s behavior. The problem went to an extent when rumors started doing the rounds that Deepika has been removed and Asin Thottumkal has been roped in to replace Deepika. Later, Ramesh S. Taurani, the producer of “Race 2” and Deepika Padukone reached at some sort of agreement that put an end to all the rumors, while Deepika continued shooting for “Race 2”. As of now the first phase of shooting that began on the 5th of November, 2011 has been wrapped in 15 days flat. The second phase of the shooting started on 23rd January, 2012 and is currently going on. Whether “Race 2” would be racier or not, only time will tell.
