The Garam Masala duo is back again and this time they are making lot of noise as they are the Desi Boyz. This movie also is the debut movie for Rohit Dhawan as director, son of director David Dhawan. The movie talks about two friends Nick Mathur and Jerry Patel who have a well to do life but things go wrong when both the friends are forced to do things that they would have never thought about. The movie has gone through lot of controversies when one of the writer Shyam Devkatte claimed that the initial story was written by him and the concept was stolen. On the other hand, Rohit Dhawan went through lot of casting issues. Initially, it was Sonam Kapoor that got the role but she declined the offer as she found that the script was not what she wanted to do. It is also said that the role then went to Anushka Sharma but it got declined as well and then Deepika and Chitrangda were casted.

The economic depression not only showed us the mistakes that we made around the globe with our finances but also provided some new kind of script to most of the Bollywood directors. In the last few years, there were many movies that revolved around the economic depression and Desi Boyz is just an addition to that. Directed by debutant director Rohit Dhawan, Desi Boyz stars Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Chitrangda Singh, Deepika Padukone, Omi Vaidya and Anupam Kher.
The plot revolves around Jerry Patel aka Rocco (Akshay) and Nick Mathur aka Hunter (John) who have come to UK for their studies at Oxford University. Over a period of years, they get good opportunities as investment banker and they settle down in London. While Nick is happy enjoying life with his fiancee Radhika (Deepika), Jerry is enjoying his way of life with his nephew Veer (Shraman Jain) and dating his former teacher Tanya (Chitrangda). However, things begin to go wrong when the economic depression begins. Nick begins to lose his job and on the other side Jerry is unhappy that social services will place his nephew Veer in a foster home. However, when they are totally depressed they meet the owner of strip club Desi Boyz who picks them up as sexy pole dancers. However, it soon becomes a matter of morality over necessity for both the lead actors.
On performance scale, Akshay is definitely better than John and he has that toothy smile all over the movie which makes audiences laugh out loud. Akshay is also brilliant in some of the serious scenes. However, that does not mean that John did not do justice to his role as Hunter. He is certainly improving his acting and dancing skills with every movie and it’s good to see him doing different characters which test his ability all around. Deepika Padukone and Chitrangda Singh will still need to improve their acting skills and look out for meatier roles because in this movie they are nothing more than eye candy. There is a lot of sizzling chemistry between the two girls but that is just how Rohit Dhawan has decided to use the two leading ladies in the movie. Omi Vaidya is really good in his character role and he already proved his acting skills in his first movie. Technically, the movie is brilliant and one should applaud the cinematography by Natarajan Subramaniam for the camera movements that make this jazzy movie better. The music by Pritam complements with the mood of the movie and therefore audiences never feel that the story line has been chopped off. The story and screenplay by Rohit Dhawan is good when compared to mindless comedies that his father directs.
To conclude, Desi Boyz is definitely a total masala Bollywood film where you can get all the elements combined together. You definitely get some level of mindless comedy attached to it but there is a decent story connected which might justify the entire plot. After Garam Masala, Akshay and John are back but this movie is nothing like Garam Masala or Dostana so if you are looking for something different and interesting then pick Desi Boyz this weekend.
Desi Boyz, the title itself tells us that the music of the movie is going to be the highlight and therefore the producers have decided to rope in Pritam for the music of the movie. John and Akshay did created sensation all over India when they danced together on the tunes of Garam Masala and director Rohit Dhawan is making sure that they do the same once again for him. Hence, the music is basically very loud and entertaining to keep the drums going on and dance moves grooving on. Let’s take some close look at the music that has been provided by Pritam for Desi Boyz.
Desi Boyz music album has a really bang on opening with – Make Some Noise for the Desi Boyz. This track is made to show the bonding between the two lead male actors and plus the music is very energetic. Most of the lyrics in the song is blended with Hindi, English and Punjabi words and therefore it makes a great combination for the album. K.K sings this song with Bob and they have taken the song to the next level making it an instant hit and chartbuster. The song is very high pitched and therefore there is no time to rest if you are dancing on this track.
The second track in the album Subha Hone Na De is just another club number that will make a lot of noise on the streets and in the club. This song is sung by Mika Singh and therefore you can guarantee that it will have all the fun and entertainment quotient in it. A part of this song is sung by Shefali Alvaris and she takes over very smoothly to keep the tempo of the song going on without any interruption. This song is surely going to rise the music charts in few days or weeks.
Jhak Maar Ke in the film belongs to John Abraham but it is one of the biggest hits in the album. The song is basically a Bollywood item number song that will take over from the moment it begins and therefore you can be sure that this number is on your music player. Sung by Neeraj Shreedhar and Harshdeep Kaur they have added a lot of fun and groove to the song to keep the temperature rising in the club.
Sonu Nigam and Shilpa Rao handles the fourth song in the album which is called Allah Maaf Kare. It is a very Indian song but it has a musical factor to it which sounds like Razia Gundo Mein Phas Gayi, but Allah Maaf Kare is a better version mainly because Sonu Nigam handles the song very nicely.
Let It Be fails to make an impression probably because the tempo is slow and it comes in to the movie when things are not going right for the characters. However, Shaan does some justice to the song by bringing in the guilt factor to the voice and making it feel like a definitely sad song that would bring some variety to the album.
Tu Mera Hero is the last track in the album but it is very similar to Subha Hone Na De. The rest of the songs like Allah Maaf Kare, Jhak Maar Ke, Subah Hone Na De and Make Some Noise for the Desi Boyz are available in remixed version as well.
Hence, overall the music for Desi Boyz is not really bad and most of the songs in the album are fast and loud music numbers. If you love typical Bollywood songs then Desi Boyz will definitely keep you on the toes because song combinations just keep going better and better as you keep listening more songs. Pritam did not do well in few movies that he did recently like Always Kabhi Kabhi and Tell Me O Kkhuda, but in Desi Boyz he has come up with hard musical tracks that will keep music lovers asking for more.
Baba Pandey’s Rating 2.5/5: Hey all, i just watched the movie today and its just “okay” movie. For a time pass and few good songs you can watch it out. Nothing Special anyways…
