Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan passes away in Karachi

Karachi: Mehi Hassan, the legendary and maestro of Ghazal, has passed away earlier today in Karachi. He has been suffering from various diseases for last many years but for last one year, his health turned worse and eventually the legendary ghazal singer died today. Mehdi Hassan ‘s each ghazal is a like a diamond but some of his ghazals turned blockbusters such as ‘Jab Koi Pyar Say’, ‘Ab Ke Hum Bichde To Shaayad’ and ‘Guncha-e-Shauq Laga hei Khilne’ among many others.

Hassan was born to a traditional music family in 1927 in Luna village in Rajasthan, India and at the time of partition his family migrated to Pakistan. Mehdi Hassan left his performances in late 1980s because of his bad health problems. Other reports suggest that he left singing in 1999. He died following multiple organ failure. He was 84.

Hassan had tremendous and big fan following in the entire world in particular in India and Pakistan. Although he had been suffering severe health problems since last one year and he had been in and out of hospitals, but last month doctors discharged him. Few days back he was admitted again to Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi where he died at around 12:22 p.m. today after his long battles against various ailments. His son Arif Hassan confirmed the news of the legendary singer’s death. He was on ventilator. After learning the death news of the great ghazal singer, his fans have started gathering outside the hospital.

Arif Hassan says that his father has been ill for around 12 years but this year his father’s condition turned bad. It was learnt that Mehdi Hassan was suffering from chest, lung and urinary tract ailments. His style of singing was followed by many known ghazal singers and still the newcomers follow him hugely. He will be remembered forever.
