Finally the date of the release for Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai is out. The film would now hit screens on the 8th of June 2012. The film was supposed to be released on 26th January with Agneepath, but since the producers did not want to have a clash the release has been shifted to June.
Shanghai is adapted from a Greek novel; the film is a political thriller which traces the life of politicians and their greed. The film talks about big powered politicians and how the common man takes his revenge. The film is also inspired by Z – directed by Costa Gavras which released in 1969.
This is Dibakar’s first attempt at making a political thriller. His last film Love, Sex Aur Dhokha was critically acclaimed and also won several accolades. Speaking on adapting a story based on the book he said adapting a film based on the book is never easy. For many it may sound easy, but the fact is the filmmaker faces same problems and needs to put the same amount of hardwork.
The film stars Abhay Deol who starred in Dibakar’s Oye Lucky Lucky Oye which was also a hit, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki again a Dibaker Banerjee discovery. Emraan plays a roadside photographer while Abhay and Kalki essay roles of a bureaucrat and a half- British girl respectively.
Dibakar also is of the view that the performance by the lead actors is surely going to surprise all and audiences would be there for a huge surprise. He says that all the pre-conceived notions that people have about Abhay and Emraan are going to be shattered when they see them on screen.
Let us all hope that Shanghai adds another feather in the cap for Dibakar Banerjee and gives him another hit after his previous ventures.
