Kolkata: Another feather has been added to the cap of veteran film-maker Shyam Benegal. He has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctorate of Literature by the Calcutta University. Aged 77 years, Benegal was awarded the degree by the University Chancellor and Governor of West Bengal M. K. Narayanan.
Benegal, who addressed the audiences, encouraged the inclusion of cinema as a part of education. Till now, education has only implied literacy, but cinema is as important as ‘language and literature’. There is also a sense of immediate communication and connectivity with cinema, than compared to written words.
He also added that the language of cinema is unique with its own set of grammar, vocabulary and syntax. It requires study in greater depth, and hence, should be made a part of school curriculum.
Shyam Benegal is a living legend when it comes to cinema works. Having bagged the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Bhushan and National Awards for various films, Benegal has created a milestone in his 40-year old career span.
