Dhanush Biography, Movie List, New Movies

The Kolaveri Genius!

Are you hooked to the ‘why this kolaveri di’ track? I am! We have Dhanush to thank for this….for he’s the genius behind this creation. Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja is better known as Dhanush and it was on the 28th of July, in the year 1983 that Dhanush was born. He’s a well-known actor, he enjoys occasional playback singing and he’s also a lyricist, who works in Tollywood. Dhanush has, in his kitty, a number of strong powerful performances like Pudhupettai, Kadhal Kondein, Aadukalam & Mayakkam Enna (all critically acclaimed) and he’s also won awards like Best Actor @ the National Film Awards. A few other films that Dhanush has been a part of and that were commercially hits are Thiruda Thirudi, Polladhavan, Yaaradi Nee Mohini, Thiruvilayadal Arambam, and Padikathavan. Kasthuri Raja (tamil film director) is Dhanush’s father and he also has a brother by the name of Selvaraghavan (who is also a director and makes Tamil films).

Career in Acting: Early (2001 To 2004)

Dhanush’s father is a well known director and so it was natural when Dhanush decided to follow his upbringing. His debut came under Kasthuri Raja’s direction in a film titled Thulluvadho Ilamai, where he was paired opposite the beautiful debutant, Sherin. This film turned out to be a huge commercial success and had big reviews and praise flowing in from every corner! The movie revolved around a guy named Mahesh, who with the help of his friends, elopes with the woman he loves….a woman named Kezia.

Dhanush’s brother, Selvaraghavan, cast Dhanush in his 1st ever directorial venture titled Kadhal Kondein and it was this film that was Dhanush’s breakthrough film. Dhanush played the character of a youth (named Vinodh) who is mentally-disturbed, and who yearns for his friend’s love (the role of the friend was played by actor Sonia Agarwal)…and the story talks of how Vinodh becomes possessive about her. This film received critical acclaim…it became a huge commercial success, and the world saw Dhanush plunging into the foray of ‘popular’ Tamil film actors.

The year 2003 brought forward another film titled Thiruda Thirudi (which was once again a blockbuster). This happened to be Dhanush’s 1st ever hero-centric role, for which he received positive reviews. (He was cast opposite Chaya Singh in this film). Dhanush’s outstanding performance in the track Manmadha Rasa, earned him tons of appreciation and subsequently it became somewhat of a cult song.

The Setback in Dhanush’s Life: Year 2004 To 2005

By the year 2005 came to a finish….Dhanush already had 3 profitable ventures he could boast about….after which his following projects gained somewhat mixed reviews, but sadly turned out to be commercial failures. Dhanush’s 1st action flick titled Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan was his 1st failure (he was cast opposite the beautiful Aparna Pillai) and this performance was tagged by critics as his “poor performance”.

Next came Ramana’s Sullan and this too earned him nothing but negative reviews. Nevertheless, this film, where he was cast opposite Sindhu Tolani, got dubbed later on as ‘Maurya’ in Telugu. Dhanush’s 3rd and most terribly-criticized failure came with Dreams where he shared the screen with 2 new actresses. This movie was directed by Dhanush’s father, and this film was tagged as an ‘adult’ film, which is what seriously hampered the movie’s progress. Also, it’s said that the movie was his biggest flop till date.

2006 and the Breakthrough in Dhanush’s Life

Pudhupettai, which was released in 2006, happens to be Dhanush’s #1 film so far (budget-wise). This film not only re-united Dhanush with his brother once again on a project, but it also gave Dhanush a chance to share the screen with two very prominent female actors named Sonia Agarwal & Sneha.

This film revolves around the passages in one’s life & the times that an ordinary-man who goes through and what pushes him to turn into this heartless gangster named ‘Kokki’ Kumar. The critics showered Dhanush with positive reviews for this role and said that he brought the character of Kokki to life and made him seem real. They tagged him as an innocent guy who successfully transmogrified into a criminal and that Dhanush’s performance was nothing short of unbelievable!

The 1st release in the year 2007 came with Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram, which took the box-office by storm!!! This film was the remake of Jogi- a successful Film in Kannada, where Dhanush was paired with Meera Jasmine.

Additional Work

This multi-talented bloke occasionally indulges in playback singing and loves to pen down lyrics…more often than not for his own movies! Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan introduced Dhanush as the playback singer and next came Pudhupettai. Films like Mayakkam Enna & Aayirathil Oruvan also have tracks that have been sung by Dhanush. One of his #1 tracks have been “Why this Kolaveri Di”, which is for the upcoming movie- 3. This film is his wife, Aishwarya’s direction.

Family/Personal Life

Dhanush belongs to a family of people who have made it big in the film industry….his father Kasthuri Raja is a famous director and so is Dhanush’s brother.  Dhanush attended the St. John’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School and from there he became interested in acting. Rajinikanth (one of the most popular actors today) happens to be Dhanush’s father-in-law….Dhanush married Aishwarya (Rajnikanth’s daughter) on the 18th of November, in the year 2004. The couple is blessed with two sons, who they’ve named Yatra and Linga.
