Dia Mirza was born to Frank Handrich, a German interior designer, artist and architect who hailed from Munich and Deepa, a Bengali Hindu woman who is also an interior designer. When Dia Mirza was 6 years old, her mother separated from her father and then when she was nine her father died. Later her mother married Ahmed Mirza. Dia Mirza used the surname of her stepfather for a long time. Ahmed Mirza died in the year 2004. Currently she also adopted the surname of her biological father and therefore she is now known as Dia Mirza Handrich.

Early Career

Dia Mirza attended the Vidyaranya High School for Boys and Girls in Khairatabad, Hyderabad and afterwards went to the Nasr School located at the same place. Later she joined the Stanley Junior College and completed her graduation from the Andhra Pradesh Open University located in Hyderabad.

She started working at a tender age of 16 while studying at the same time. She was the marketing executive at a multi media firm named Dr. Neeraj’s multimedia studio. Later she took part in a number of advertisements for both television and well as for the newspaper. Some of the advertisements were of Emami, Lipton and Walls. Her modeling assignments came in between her and her achieving a bachelor’s degree.

Dia Mirza became the second runner up at the Femina Miss India 2000 pageant. She was sent to compete at the Miss Asia Pacific where she won the crown on 3 December 2000 in Manila. Dia Mirza became part of the famed Indian trio to have won at the international pageants in the same year (Priyanka Chopra won the Miss World and Lara Dutta won the Miss Universe title in 2000 respectively).

Dia Mirza made her Bollywood debut with the film Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein opposite South Indian actor R. Madhavan. Although this film was not a box office success the songs composed by Harris Jayaraj were immensely popular among the music lovers. The name of this film is abbreviated as RHTDM. This is perhaps the only time where a Bollywood movie was unsuccessful at the time of the release but over the years gradually developing a cult following among the Indian youngsters.

Following her Bollywood debut, Dia Mirza went on to act in a number of Bollywood films. These include Deewanapan, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge, Tehzeeb, Pran Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye, Dum, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Parineeta, Dus, Fight Club, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Shootout at Lokhandwala, Cash, Heyy Babyy, Dus Kahaniyaan, Krazzy 4, Acid Factory, Kurbaan and Luck By Chance.

Her upcoming films as an actor include Alibaug and Johnny Mastana.

On a number of times, Dia Mirza has done cameo roles or made special appearances. Her intrinsic intelligence and her charming beauty make her confident and poised. She has a keen sense of direction. Unable to get major box office hits in recent times, she has quickly turned her eyes from acting and is planning to focus more on producing the Bollywood films instead. The film Love Breakups Zindagi that has been produced under the banner of Born Free Entertainment was the first film that was released by Dia Mirza’s production house. Dia Mirza the philanthropist

Dia Mirza has worked with the government of Andhra Pradesh to spread HIV awareness and to prevent the female foeticide. She has been actively involved with the Spastics Society of India, the Cancer Patients Aid Association, PETA and CRY. She has been roped in by the Coca Cola Foundation that works for the development of the rural India. As a member of PETA and an animal lover she has adopted two cheetah cubs at a zoo in Lucknow that is known as the Prince of Wales Zoological Park.

Dia Mirza and controversies

Dia Mirza actively voiced her concern against the building of a dam. She gave her full support to the Narmada Bachao Andolan that made the Bharatiya Janata Party angry. They even took out a protest march against her. Later she was even dragged into rumors about her alleged affair with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Both the Indian as well as the Pakistani news media were buzzing with the rumors but Dia Mirza denied any links with Shoaib Akhtar. From Reena Malhotra in Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein to Naina in Love Breakups Zindagi, Dia Mirza has indeed come a long way.
