A Sneak Peek Into Farhan’s Background & Personal Life

Farhan was born to screenwriters, Honey Irani (Farhan’s mother) & Javed Akhtar (Farhan’s father) in Mumbai. Shabana Azmi (actress) happens to be Farhan’s step mother. The famous Urdu poet by the name of Jan Nisar Akhtar is Farhan’s grandfather and Farah Khan (Hindi film director cum dance choreographer) is Farhan’s cousin. Farhan says that he has been brought up as a nonbeliever, in other words an atheist. Farhan also has a twin sister by the name of Zoya Akhtar who had made her directorial entrance with the film titled Luck By Chance, where Farhan played the lead role. Farhan’s married Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar, who is a hairstylist & also owns and runs B: Blunt or Juice Salon along with her brother. Farhan and Adhuna are blessed with two daughters whom they named Shakya Akhtar & Akira Akhtar.

Farhan Akhtar’s the man behind re-writing Bollywood movie scripts and bringing about a transformation in the Hindi film industry. His films are acknowledged because they always present to the audience the fresh & much needed vibrant visuals that we all need today. Farhan’s gift has constantly worked in multiples and you can see him swiftly shift from one role to another as he moves from being a writer, to a producer, the actor, director, and then Farhan the singer.

Farhan went to school at Maneckji Cooper School before moving on to HR College where he pursued a Commerce degree, but as luck would have it, he dropped out of college in the 2nd year.

Line of Business

Farhan was all of 27 years when he made a directorial & writing debut in to Hindi cinema. It was his magic that made the film titled Dil Chahta Hai such a huge raging 2001-hit!  Excel Entertainment Pvt. Limited produced the film Dil Chahta Hai. Now, Excel Entertainment Pvt. Limited is a production business that Farhan had co-established together with Mr. Ritesh Sidwani way back in the year 1999.

Dil Chahta Hai was a tale of 3 friends (played by Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan & Aamir Khan) who have of late graduated from their college and are now beginning to deal with issues such as friendship & love. Dil Chahta Hai turned out to be a commercial as well as a critical success, in particular a rage among the country’s younger generation. The film earned more than a few nominations at different award shows, like for the Best Film, Screenplay & Direction. Also, the film won the National Film Award for the Best Feature Film in Hindi that year.

Farhan’s next project was a film titled Lakshya (in the year 2004), which was based on a character who was an aimless youth who finally set an aim for himself, the aim being to be an officer in the Indian Armed Forces. The film starred actor Hrithik Roshan alongside Preity Zinta (who played the character of a TV journalist). It was strange how the film dint do wonders at the box office in spite of the strong theme and direction, but it did indeed win Farhan Akhtar extreme critical acclaim. The film’s script was written by Javed Akhtar (Farhan’s father). For the moment, he also penned down the lyrics for a Hollywood film titled Bride and Prejudice which was a Gurinder Chadha direction in the year 2004.

Next, Farhan directed the remake of Don; the chartbuster starring Amitabh Bachchan in 1978, and named the remake Don – The Chase Begins Again. The movie starred the King Khan- Shahrukh Khan in the lead role. Don – The Chase Begins Again released on the 20th of October in the year 2006. Even though the film turned out to be critically hammered, the film ultimately proved as an enormous success at bollywood box office, & grossed over a swooping 50 crores. The film also became the 5th biggest chartbuster for that year. Farhan’s next film titled Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Limited came in the year 2007 and it was this production of Farhan’s that did reasonably well at Bollywood’s box office.

The year 2007 also saw a short 12 minute directorial by Farhan Akhtar which was based & focused on the HIV stigma. The short film was titled Positive and threw light on the immense need that an HIV patient feels for the support from his family, friends and all near & dear ones. The shooting of the film was done in Mumbai, & became a part of the ‘AIDS JaaGo’ (i.e. AIDS Awake), which was a succession of 4 short films that were directed by big names in the industry like Vishal Bhardwaj, Santosh Sivan, Mira Nair, and finally Farhan Akhtar, in the joint initiative by Mirabai Films (Mira Nair’s) and charitable organisations like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation along with Avahan. The film starred actors like Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, and Arjun Mathur (it was his debut as an actor).

Much later in the year 2008 came Farhan’s debut in acting with a film titled Rock On! This movie was one of the biggest hits of that year and was critically applauded as it did outstandingly well predominantly in the metro cities across the country. The film Luck By Chance was Farhan’s sister’s (Zoya Akhtar) debut as a director and the film saw Farhan in the lead role. In the year 2010 came yet another piece of work from Farhan in the film Karthik Calling Karthik which received a decent critical review from all over. The plot of the movie was rather interesting and the film did somewhat average at the box office.

2010 was to see 2 more films with Farhan Akhtar, namely Gulel and then Dhruv. Gulel was to be the only film that Farhan did not produce but still chose to act in. Nevertheless, there have been rumors & it is reported that the film Dhruv has been delayed because Farhan wished to finish filming for his film Don 2.  Another smashing hit came in july of 2011 when farhan’s film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara released on the 15th of July 2011. Actors Abhay Deol & Hrithik Roshan are co-stars of Farhan’s in the movie.

Farhan made his debut in singing with the film Rock On!! where the majority of tracks were sung by Farhan himself. The most popular track was “zindagi na milegi doobara” & it is believed that the film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara got its name hence! There’s a song in the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara titled ‘senorita’ where all three actors have sung in their own voices!!! Farhan was also expected to do a track for the film Blue, which had A. R. Rahman’s music, but he couldn’t do so because he was caught up with his film Kartik Calling Karthik.

Farhan’s also appeared on a few TV shows as the judge, to name a few, there was the 1st season for the dance & reality show titled Nach Baliye (in the year 2005), then came a beauty pageant, which was Femina Miss India (in the year 2002). Farhan’s also featured on NDTV Imagine as the host for the TV show titled Oye! It’s Friday!
