When it comes to acting, Rajeev Khandelwal is extremely choosy. In fact besides his versatility he is well known in the film circuit for being extremely choosy with the scripts. Even in his four film old acting career, Rajeev Khandelwal has received critical acclaims for his roles and character portrayals in films like Aamir where he played the role of a greatly distressed Dr. Aamir Ali or in Shaitan where he essayed the role of ACP Arvind Mathur who is mentally torn between two worlds. Both these characters demanded power packed performances which Rajeev delivered with ease. Both these films proved to the Bollywood film fraternity as well as to the movie goers about Rajeev’s versatility and acting prowess.
Born on 16 October, 1975 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Rajeev Khandelwal always dreamt of becoming an actor right from childhood. But Rajeev’s journey to the City of Dreams, Mumbai was not at all an easy journey. Rajeev was extremely good in his academics and his family had an Army background. These are the two reasons why Rajeev’s parents were not at all supportive of Rajeev’s decision to pursue a career in acting. He was studying Engineering but left that to join Xavier’s in Ahmadabad and completed his BSc. in Chemistry. He found the subject quite boring and was looking forward to do something creative.
He tried to join the army but fortunately was rejected because of his form. That was the time he realized to put in efforts to realize his childhood dreams. Thinking this he came to Delhi. At first he started working on documentaries, writing the scripts as well as directing them. He prepared the documentaries on women labor, on old age and also on Indian Army. His fictional series named Samarpan which was aired on Doordarshan was based on the para military forces of India and even won an award.
To fulfill his dreams he had donned many caps. He worked as a production controller at a production house based in Delhi. Later he started modeling for numerous brands like Green Label Whisky, Videocon refrigerators, Kodak Express and LML. At some point of time he got the news that Balaji Telefilms was in Delhi to look for a fresh face. Rajeev went for the audition and luckily was selected. He was selected for Kya Hadsa Kya Haqeeqat. But it was a blink and miss role for Rajeev. In 2002, Rajeev featured in Kahin to Hoga and played the lead role of Sujal Garewal. The role was ambitious and egoistic. It was later said that Rajeev was born to play the role of Sujal. It created a star or rather a sensation out of Rajeev Khandelwal.
Since the show was aired on STAR PLUS, it was aptly said that “a star was born on STAR”. He left Kahin to Hoga in 2005 Later Rajeev went to take part in serials like Tome Bomb 9/11, essaying the role of RAW officer Varun Awasthi, in CID, where he played the role of an ACP Prithviraj and in Left Right Left, where he played the role of Captain Rajveer Singh Shikhawat. Because he hailed from an army background that is why he loved essaying the roles of patriots and security personnel like army officer, police officers and special agents.
Entry into mainstream movies
Rajeev Khandelwal made his debut in the Bollywood films in 2008, with the film Aamir which was directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. The story revolved around the life of a Muslim man who is threatened by Islamic extremists to carry out bombing in Mumbai. As for a debutant actor, Rajeev received tons of acclaims both from the film critics as well as from the movie goers. Although the movie opened poorly, it gradually turned out to be a giant killer and recorded good collections in the following weeks.
Aamir gave Rajeev the much needed platform in Bollywood film industry. Two years later he acted in his second film titled Peter Gaya Kaam Se that was released in 2010. It was a blink and miss movie. In 2011, Rajeev proved his worth for the second time when he acted in Shaitan, a thriller that was directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Rajeev played the role of a police inspector. Just like Rajeev’s first film, even Shaitan was both commercially successful as well as critically acclaimed. Shaitan went on to win a large number of awards as well. His fourth film was Soundtrack that was also released in 2011. Although this film received some positive reviews from the critics, the film did not do too well at box office.
Life as a TV presenter
Besides a busy acting life in Bollywood, Rajeev has been quite busy in the TV screens as well. In 2006 he hosted the TV show Deal Ya No Deal. In 2009, Rajeev hosted the very first season of Sach Ka Saamna that was the Indian version of the popular US show The Moment of Truth. In 2011, Rajeev Khandelwal became the brand ambassador for the National Geographic Channel. He has been roped in to host a show named Supercars that will feature the likes of Chevy Volt, Camaro, Viper and The Dodge Challenger.
