Mayakkam Enna was Richa’s first ever Tamil Movie and once again this young beauty received numerous positive reviews, proving that she is indeed a versatile actor.
The Early Life…On the Personal Front
20th of March, 1986 was the day that Paula Gangopadhyay and Utpal Gangopadhyay were blessed with a baby girl they named Antara…she was born in New Delhi into this loving Bengali- Brahmin house. Utpal Gangopadhyay (Richa’s father) is the COO at Netshape Technologies and Paula Gangopadhyay (Richa’s mother) is the Director of Education @ The Henry Ford Museum (Detroit). It was in the year 1989 that Richa’s parents decided to settle in America…and Richa spent her younger days growing up in Michigan & Pennsylvania. As a kid, she was a student at the Okemos High School. Richa appeared in local media because she was the founder of a program for youth-tutoring which focused on the ‘at-risk’ kids in Lansing…this program was headed by Richa for 4 years. Richa’s also done her major’s in the field of Dietetics & Health Administration from Michigan State University in Michigan.
Richa stepped into the world of modeling at an early age and she began modeling in the year 2005. In the year 2007 (August), she was crowned Miss Michigan and the month of December brought better news when Richa became Miss India USA (for the year 2007) @ the 26th annual pageant which was held @ the Royal Albert’s Palace (New Jersey).
Apart from that, Richa was also chosen as Miss Photogenic as well as Miss Beautiful Eyes & went on to qualify and represent the United States of America in the seventeenth Annual Miss India Worldwide Pageant that was held in Johannesburg. Not to forget, this young girl also won the title of Miss Congeniality in the Miss India USA pageant.
2008 To 2009: The Beginning of Her Career in the Film Industry
Richa Gangopadhyay left from the States in the year 2008 and she headed to a place in India by the name of Shastrinagar, where she planned on learning more about films and decided that she wanted to be an actress. She became a part of an acting school (Anupam Kher’s) & later graduated having achieved a diploma. She later, with help from this school ‘Actor Prepares’, crafted her portfolio and soon she had offers pouring from fashion houses for modeling and fashion shows. Early in the year 2009, she was seen featuring in this commercial for a company called Vatika, for their Almond Hair Oil (where she shared the screen with actor Preity Zinta). Richa’s also been the face for brands like Kalaniketan, Malabar Gold and Peter England.
Her Entrance in the Film Industry (2009 Onwards)
Richa signed to play the lead in a Telugu film titled Leader (2010) which was an AVM Productions production and a Sekhar Kammula direction. This project came to her after she was spotted at a gym and was recommended to the assistant director, who further recommended Richa to Sekhar (the director). So, on her birthday, Richa left for Hyderabad, where she auditioned and got the lead role for the film. Little did she know, two days later, Richa was shooting for this film. In this movie, Richa played a character Archana, who was the CEO for a Television channel….this girl is a politician’s daughter who falls deeply in love (Rana Daggubati plays her love-interest).
This movie backed numerous positive reviews…. did very well commercially and Richa’s role was tagged by critics as being “charming as well as pretty” along with being “good at playing performance oriented roles”. Following this success, P. Vasu (a director) signed Richa for a film titled Nagavalli, which was a sequel to Chandramukhi. Richa shared the screen with some big names like Venkatesh, Shraddha Das, Poonam Kaur & Anushka Shetty for this movie. This particular film received average reviews from critics and Richa was portrayed as this girl who is psychologically possessed (apparently by some ghost in Nagavalli)….the critics described her performance in this film as strong, convincing and super impressive.
The year 2011 brought forward a role for a film titled Mirapakaay (an action packed flick) that featured names likes Deeksha Seth and Ravi Teja (lead roles). It was thanks to her role and performance in a film she had done earlier on (Leader)…after which Harish Shankar (the director of that film) noticed Richa at a party and decided to offer her his next film. She was initially offered the part of a character named Deeksha (because Richa also happened to be an NRI), however once the two met to discuss the script, Harish decided that she would be better at playing the role of Vinamra, who is this traditional Brahmin young girl. This movie received positive reviews from critics and Richa’s performance was for the 1st time tagged as “average” by the critics.
You will be seeing Richa next in a few Tamil films…one of them is Mayakkam Enna, which happens to be this drama film that is based on a marriage (and features Dhanush). Gossip about Richa Gangopadhyay:
This pretty lady only believes in playing roles that fit into a ‘family’ audience….and as far as the topic of ‘exposing’ goes, she will only do so if the script MUST need it. It is believed that Richa is romancing Rana (a Tollywood upcoming star)…but Richa has not spoken of this relationship in public. She denies that she is in a relationship with Rana and says that it is nothing more than a ‘friendship’.
