He’s the chocolate boy of bollywood….he speaks of innocence….he exuberates sincerity….passion for his work….it seems as though his eyes can never lie…. He’s a star who is dedicated…who promises to achieve and to deliver….he seems down to earth….centered….poised….as though he is content….he’s been a part of the Hindi film industry since the year 2003 and as I watch one film after another starring this young lad, it seems as though he was born to be a star….it seems as though this is his destiny….it seems as though he is here to offer his share of wonders to Hindi cinema….as you watch his films, you will but notice how he has grown as an actor….as a performer….as an entertainer….the characters that he plays seem as though they are for real….so I guess it’s fair when I say that to me Shahid Kapoor is a star who puts life into the characters that he chooses to play….a magic, that I firmly believe, comes only & only when you put not just your heart, but your soul too into delivering….and this young lad does just that….and with what finesse!…I’m sure his work has been proof enough for all those who tagged him as the dark horse when he had just stepped into the film industry…this boy has carved a niche for himself and its out in the open for all to see that it wasn’t exactly a cake walk for him!
Shahid Kapoor, son of Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem has made his way through into bollywood and acting after he’s been a model and a trained dancer, all at the age of only 28! Shahid was born in Maharashtra on the 25th of February in the year 1981.
Shahid’s father Pankaj Kapoor is an actor and now also a director. Shahid’s mother Neelima Azeem is an actor as well as a classical dancer. Kapoor’s parents underwent a divorce when Shahid was a baby, just around the tender age of three, after which he lived mostly with his mum, Neelima Azeem. Shahid’s father, Pankaj Kapoor married once again to a lady named Supriya Pathak, with whom, it is said, that Shahid shares a warm and a good relationship. Even though shahid’s parents went through a separation, Shahid has always come forward and said that his father has been an important part of his life. Shahid Kapoor has a sister whose name is Sana; a brother who’s named Ruhan as well as a half-brother whose name is Ishaan Kapoor. Ishaan (Shahid’s brother) has starred in a bollywood film titled Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi in the year 2005, where Shahid played the lead role. Mr. Anwar Azeem, was Shahid Kapoor’s maternal grandfather. Anwar Azeem was an author & a renowned Marxist journalist from Bihar.
Shahid Kapoor was a student at the Rajhans Vidyalaya in Mumbai, from where he did his schooling.
On The Personal Front…
When Shahid Kapoor was filming for Fida, he began seeing Kareena Kapoor (actor). This couple became the center of attraction for the public as well as the media…people said that they were the “perfect couple”….that they were “compatible”….they seemed to be everyone’s favorite & it seemed as though this duo would tie the knot….Shahid and Kareena had been a couple for almost three long years before they ended their so called “perfect” relationship. It was during the filming of their movie Jab We Met that it was reported that the couple had split up. Shahid has never been seen in the media being bitter, (if I may use the word), when asked about his relationship with Kareena Kapoor. He’s been a thorough gentleman, he’s shown immense respect for her and has accepted the break up with dignity and grace that, at the time, seemed astonishing remarkable. Shahid’s been reported as having said that Kareena & he ended on a ‘good’ note and have been on good terms even after the separation. He has also been cited in the media wishing Kareena Kapoor all the good luck & happiness in the world. He’s also being very vocal about the fact that he feels Kareena is an incredible and a wonderful human being and that he holds immense respect for the young lady…to be honest, its rather unusual to see a couple being so civil and gracious even after a break-up… kudos to both!!!
Oh! Not to forget….there was a horrid controversy that did the rounds with this duo…there was an MMS doing the rounds of this couple kissing that was caught on a camera…
After the break-up, Shahid Kapoor has been linked with a few other co-stars like Vidya Balan & Amrita Rao….the latest scoop is that Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor are dating each other….even though they have not yet come public with the same!
His Early Life…
Shahid was just 18 years old when landed in the Pepsi commercial alongside Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Shahrukh Khan post the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (in the year 1998). So, Shahid started off as a face in the ad industry and then was featured in several nusic videos till he finally made his way into bollywood as a dancer (background) in the film ‘Taal’ by Subhash Ghai in the year 1999. He was seen in the track Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jawe where the main lead was Aishwarya Rai (actress). Till date, Shahid is known for his skills as a dancer and this he owes to Shiamak Davar (a renowned choreographer in Bollywood) under who Shahid trained for years. Shahid was a student at the Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts (SDIPA). Later, Shahid became a part of Shiamak Davar’s troupe and this is how an Ad-man named Ken Ghosh first cited & recognized Shahid’s talent. This discovery earned Shahid Kapoor his first ever break in the industry as an actor with the film titled ‘Ishq Vishk’ (in the year 2003) that ended up as an average grossing film at the box office. Although, this movie won Shahid the Best Debut (Male) Award at the Filmfare Awards for his work in the movie. Shahid played the character of Rajiv Mathur who is a carefree lad set in the middle of a love story! Shahid was paired opposite Shenaz Treasurywala (actress) & Amrita Rao (actress) and they shared a cute chemistry on- screen. Shahid had to wait a long period, of almost four years before he got his debut in bollywood as an actor! What followed next, were some noteworthy films and performances by Shahid in films like Fida (in the year 2004) & Shikhar (in the year 2005). Shahid kapoor’s 1st commercial success was Vivah in the year 2006. Vivah was a Sooraj R. Barjatya direction that ended up being Shahid’s largest commercial success till date which was followed with his next super hit a year later titled Jab We Met (in the year 2007).
Taran Adarsh (a Film critic) from indiaFM noted that Shahid Kapoor was an actor worth watching. He said Shahid possessed all the qualities that are needed to make it to the top in bollywood. He said Shahid has the looks for bollywood along with being a great performer who has exceptional skills as a dancer. Furthermore, Taran Adarsh said Shahid Kapoor possesses a fresh dash of originality as an entertainer, & that he embraces dramatic as well as touching moments flourishingly. The only advice from this man to Shahid was that he needed to pick his roles wisely and opt for the right assignments in future…to ensure that the journey up the ladder, to the top of bollywood would be minus the hiccups!!!
The subsequent year, Shahid worked yet again with Ken Ghosh (director) in a thriller titled Fida, where Shahid was seen cast opposite Kareena Kapoor in addition to actor Fardeen Khan. This movie failed to perform at the bollywood box office, however Shahid’s routine was admired. The Tribune said that Shahid Kapoor excelled in the role & looked fresh. He played the character of an impetuous emotional and naive guy, who’s sucked into doing wrong because of his qualities. He does though; manage to induce sympathy from the audience. Next, he was seen in the loving comedy titled Dil Maange More where he was cast opposite actress Soha Ali Khan, Ayesha Takia & Tulip Joshi. His act opened to varied reviews. Rediff.com was seen quoting that Shahid has a propensity to imitate actor Shahrukh Khan. The site also said that the imitation was does extremely well at a few places, but at some others it was just overdone!
The year 2005 saw Shahid Kapoor in 3 more films and Shahid continued to climb up on the ladder of ‘success’. However, in the film titled Shikhar (John M. Matthan direction), Shahid’s performance was gravely acclaimed, & earned Kapoor the very 1st nomination for the Best Actor at the Star Screen Awards. Shahid, in this drama played the character of Jaidev Vardhan, who is a man who’s sucked in a world of greed & money. indiaFM was once again seen commenting that Shahid Kapoor isn’t only getting better with each new film, but he’s also matching up to Ajay in roughly all sequences.
In the year 2006, Shahid featured in a film ‘36 China Town’ which revolved around the tale of 7 people who are in the middle of a murder mystery! This film turned out to be a modest success in spite of receiving varied reviews from the critics. Shortly after this release, Shahid was seen in his 2nd release for the next year titled Chup Chup Ke, a Priyadarshan comedy. This movie also turned out to be a rather reasonable hit at the bollywood box office.
The last film that released in the year 2006, starring Shahid Kapoor was a romantic drama named Vivah (a Sooraj R. Barjatya direction) which depicted the voyage of 2 people from them getting engaged to being married. Taran Adarsh once again noted, Shahid Kapoor executed his role like never before. Shahid has played it super-cool (for his character in Ishq Vishk) compared to him playing brilliantly in Fida. One has to watch both the films to see how Shahid has grown….be that as an actor….ad as a performer…it was indeed a tremendous growth….what came across very strongly was how exceptionally well Shahid handled the emotional sequences.
It was in the year 2006, sometime during summer that Kapoor got on with his 1st world tour which was called the Rockstars Concert, where he was seen alongside other Bollywood stars like Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan, Esha Deol, John Abraham, Zayed Khan & Mallika Sherawat.
The year 2007 saw Shahid starring in another two films. The first was a film titled Fool and Final, which was an Ahmed Khan direction. The movie received unenthusiastic reviews and sadly failed to perform too well at bollywood box office. It was a low phase here as Shahid did not receive any positive reviews for this performance. The second release was a romantic comedy titled Jab We Met, which was an Imtiaz Ali direction. Here, Shahid starred opposite actress Kareena Kapoor & this film turned out to amid the biggest hits for that year. Jab We Met told the tale of 2 youngsters who are totally different personalities…how they meet while travelling by train…and how a love-hate relationship takes the form of love! Shahid played the character named Aditya Kashyap, who is a crestfallen young entrepreneur who’s full of despair & angst. Jab We Met was very praised by the critics and Shahid’s work earned him numerous Best Actor nominations at several award ceremonies, like the Filmfare Awards. Rajeev Masand (CNN-IBN) said that in spite of the risks of being outshined by his co-star (in the film) Kareena, , Shahid Kapoor was a winner in leaving a deep-seated impression through the performance that spoke of maturity & was understated. He also said that Shahid’s performance was indeed the ideal foil for Kareena’s boisterousness in the movie!
Next came Aziz Mirza’s Kismat Konnection (in the year 2008) where Shahid was paired opposite actress Vidya Balan. This film failed to do too well at the box office.
The year 2009 saw Shahid Kapoor featuring in the film Kaminey (a Vishal Bhardwaj direction) where he was cast opposite Priyanka Chopra. Shahid played a dual character of twins named Guddu & Charlie, each burdened with speech impediment. He received enthusiastic critic reviews. Rajeev Masand who is from CNN-IBN commented on Shahid’s performance in the film saying that Shahid Kapoor had risen to the test of creating 2 characters that were entirely different out of Guddu & Charlie, and that he delivered a convincing performance both times! He said that Shahid had finally won at breaking off from the chocolate-boy tag & that he had given proof of potential once trusted with such well-written roles.
Later that year Shahid appeared in a dreamy comedy titled Dil Bole Hadippa! (Anurag Singh direction) where he was cast opposite Rani Mukherji. Next came the film Paathshala (a Ahmed Khan direction) where Shahid was cast opposite Ayeesha Takis.
